A physical education teacher’s willingness to help a young student has turned into a widely shared reminder of the role compassion plays in education.
The video centers on Jonathan Oliver, a 34-year-old physical education teacher at WG Nunn Elementary School in Valdosta, Georgia. During a routine basketball activity, Oliver was approached by kindergarten student Kristen Paulk, who asked him to help fix her hair. Oliver knelt on the gym floor and carefully styled her hair into a ponytail, ensuring she was comfortable before returning to class.

Oliver admitted he was caught off guard by the response. He later spoke about the moment during an appearance on Good Morning America, explaining that helping students with small needs is simply part of creating a nurturing environment. He emphasized that many educators perform similar acts daily without expectation of recognition.
“We, as teachers, aim to create an environment where students feel as comfortable as they do at home and genuinely enjoy their time here,” Oliver explained. “Our goal is to shower them with care and support. In this instance, it was as simple as helping with a ponytail.”
